Visiting Teaching Message
December 2008
How Is Jesus Christ the Light and the Life of the World? 1 Nephi 17:13: "I will also be your light in the wilderness; . . . wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led." Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "Jesus Christ is the light and the life of the world. All things were made by him. Under the direction and according to the plan of God the Father, Jesus Christ is the Creator, the source of the light and the life of all things. . . . "Jesus Christ is the light of the world because he is the source of the light which 'proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space' (D&C 88:12). His light is 'the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world' (D&C 93:2). His example and his teachings illuminate the path we should walk. . . . "Jesus Christ is the life of the world because of his unique position in what the scriptures call 'the great and eternal plan of deliverance from death' (2 Nephi 11:5). His Resurrection and his Atonement save us from both physical and spiritual death" ("The Light and the Life," Liahona, Dec. 1997, 42–43; see New Era, Dec. 1996, 6). How Can I Find Hope in Jesus Christ? President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency: "The gospel of Jesus Christ has the divine power to lift you to great heights from what appears at times to be an unbearable burden or weakness. The Lord knows your circumstances and your challenges. He said to Paul and to all of us, 'My grace is sufficient for thee.' And like Paul we can answer: 'My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me' (2 Corinthians 12:9)" ("Have We Not Reason to Rejoice?" Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2007, 19). Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president: "Mormon asks, 'What is it . . . ye shall hope for?' His answer tells us of the three great hopes: 'Ye shall have hope through the atonement of Christ and the power of his resurrection, to be raised unto life eternal' (Moroni 7:41). "When you were baptized, you became participants in the first great hope, the Atonement of Christ. Every time you worthily partake of the sacrament, you have the opportunity to begin again. . . . Your hope and faith in the Savior will increase as you repent and make personal changes. . . . "The second great hope is the Resurrection. You are all promised that through our Savior Jesus Christ you will be resurrected. . . . "With the hope of the Atonement and the Resurrection, you have a third great hope, the hope of eternal life. . . . Because you have a Savior, you also believe in a happy, eternal life of creating, serving, and learning. You are already in the strait and narrow path, and there is hope smiling brightly before you. . . . You just need to stay in, pressing forward with a brightness of hope" ("There Is Hope Smiling Brightly before Us," Liahona and Ensign, May 2003, 103–5).

Service Project..... Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008

We are getting ready for a Christmas visit to Infinia. Our goal is to have a lap blanket or walker caddy for each patient there. We had a great crew of women show up to cut polar fleece lap throws. Some of our ladies were brave enough to sew the walker caddies that will allow people to carry a book, glasses, and other incidentals with them as they use their walkers. Thirteen women came out. 30 lap throws and 10 walker caddies were completed. We have such a great group of women who give their time and talents to help others. Thank you all for coming out and making this a great evening. We will be looking forward to the Christmas season and sharing with others!

The trail from Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Great Salt Lake Valley was approximately 1,300 miles long and would ultimately lead 70,000 pioneers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the West. Take the journey with them. Stop along the trail and read their own accounts of what happened.

Visiting Teaching Message
October 2008
Gender Is an Essential Characteristic of Eternal Identity and Purpose,” Ensign, Oct 2008, 67
Teach the scriptures and statements that meet the needs of the sisters you visit. Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you teach to share what they have felt and learned.
The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” Liahona, Oct. 2004, 49; Ensign, Nov. 1995, 102).
Why Is Gender Essential?
Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “[Gender] in large measure defines who we are, why we are here upon the earth, and what we are to do and become. For divine purposes, male and female spirits are different, distinctive, and complementary. … The unique combination of spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional capacities of both males and females were needed to implement the plan of happiness” (“Marriage Is Essential to His Eternal Plan,” Liahona, June 2006, 51; Ensign, June 2006, 83).
Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president: “As spirit daughters of God, women ‘received their first lessons in the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth’ (D&C 138:56) on the earth. They were among the ‘noble and great ones’ (D&C 138:55) who ‘shouted for joy’ (Job 38:7) at the creation of the earth because they would be given a physical body with the opportunity to be proven in a mortal sphere (see Abraham 3:25). They wished to work side by side with righteous men to accomplish eternal goals that neither can attain independently. Female roles did not begin on earth, and they do not end here. A woman who treasures motherhood on earth will treasure motherhood in the world to come” (“A ‘Mother Heart,’” Liahona and Ensign, May 2004, 76).
What Can I Do Because of My Role in Heavenly Father’s Plan?
Margaret D. Nadauld, former Young Women general president: “Women of God can never be like women of the world. The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. … We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith” (“The Joy of Womanhood,” Liahona, Jan. 2001, 18; Ensign, Nov. 2000, 15).
Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “The premortal and mortal natures of men and women were specified by God Himself. … [Sometimes women] ask: ‘Is a woman’s value dependent exclusively upon her role as a wife and mother?’ The answer is simple and obvious: No. … Every righteous man and woman has a significant role to play in the onward march of the kingdom of God. …
“… My dear sisters, we believe in you. We believe in and are counting on your goodness and your strength, … And we believe that God’s plan is for you to become queens and to receive the highest blessings any woman can receive in time or eternity” (“Women of Righteousness,” Liahona, Dec. 2002, 36–37; Ensign, Apr. 2002, 66–69).

Recipe of the Month
Navajo Fry Bread
3 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp of salt
Mix this together, then add
1 1/2 c. water
3 Tbsp. oil
Hand Mix, adding additional water until dough is sticky. Do this quickly because once the dough is mixed thoroughly you cannot add the additional water.
Keep on kneading until dough is completely mixed and sticky. Keep dough covered with plastic wrap so it doesn’t dry out. Wait about 10 minutes.
Heat oil until hot, almost smoking, regulating the temperature to keep it hot.
Pat out small piece of dough until it’s flat and in the size you want.
Fry in hot Oil, turn over to brown on both sides. Repeat.
Dough will keep for about 1to 2 days in the Fridge.
You can use these for Navajo Tacos, great with burgers as a bun, eat with your eggs or stew, or just spread butter and honey or just butter. Yummmm!
If you missed “In the Kitchen” with Jeralyn – Enjoy!
